POWER OF BEING MENTALLY STRONG IN TIMES OF CRISIS

Mental stress during lockdown

"Life is full of uncertainties, ups and downs, difficulties, obstacles, opportunities and possibilities."  - Dr. T.P Chia.

Those who hope for the ups while going down in life, those who look for opportunities amidst the problems and those who find possibilities when things seem to be impossible are the ones who are mentally strong enough to be ready to face any kind of challenges in life. We may not accept it but mental strength is something which many of us lack during a tragedy or disaster. At a time when the entire world is shaken by Covid-19 pandemic, mental well being has become equally important as physical well being. The panic and mental stress caused by the virus outbreak especially in Kerala, which is one of the worst hit states in India invites serious concern.

Reasons for corona induced mental stress in Kerala:

  • Fear of isolation: A major reason for worry among Keralites is the society's approach towards those diagnosed with the disease. The very thought of being isolated and being treated differently generates fear and stress among people. Learning to deal with isolation is thus important to reduce mental stress.

  • Fear of having no money: As far as daily wage workers are concerned, the biggest reason for them to worry is having no money to make the both ends meet. As long as they aren't able to go out and work, they can't earn money to take care of their family. This leads to mental stress and frustration.
  • Fear of death: The news of people dying everywhere naturally creates an atmosphere of fear and panic. On top of that, when there is a lack of awareness regarding the disease and an overflow of fake news, people begin to fear for their lives even if they aren't actually at greater risk. Physical well-being is directly proportional to mental well-being. Fear, anxiety and panic will add on to the stress level and people will find it more difficult to cope with the pandemic.

Stress will do no good!

Reducing the stress level is the first and foremost thing one needs to do while dealing with corona pandemic or any other tragic situation. Here are some useful points to consider during tough times.

●     Awareness is important: As long as you are not fully aware of what is happening around you and what can save you from it, you will only raise your stress level. Differentiating between real and fake news is also important to be actually aware of the crisis. Government helpline numbers are always the best and right source to seek assistance. For example, people in Kerala can always reach on Disha helpline number,1056 (toll free in Kerala and Lakshadweep) for any assistance regarding covid-19. Remember, misinformation can do more damage than anything else. There is no need to believe the fake news floating on whatsapp or other social networks when a simple whatsapp 'Namaste' on 9013151515 can give you all the right facts regarding corona virus. In short, check only reliable sources and stay well informed about the happenings.

●     Take precautions and stay positive: Many a time, our mind becomes so negative after listening to all the negative news around us that we lose all our hope to recover from the crisis. Do not spend too much time on TV or social media. Too much negativity will clutter the mind with negative thoughts. In such a situation, we often end up not taking the right precautions. Staying positive is the key to win life's battles. Read something positive like some motivation stories or listen to some inspirational talks.

●     Help yourself and others: Helping each other in times of adversities is the best way to survive any tragedy. Tell yourself to calm down and with a clear mind, get ready to face the challenges that life throws at you. Suggest ways in which your loved ones can find peace of mind and can stay focused during a calamity. Your little gestures like paying your maid an advance salary can be a great help for them. Do your part to keep the people around you unaffected during such crisis.

You will be able to fight the physical problems around you only if you have achieved mental clarity to think of solutions to ward away the troubles. Those who aren't strong enough to take care of their mental well-being must seek immediate support from a counselor near you.
